How to Choose the Right Newborn Photographer in Surrey: 10 Things Every Parent Should Know
Bringing your new baby into the world is one of life's biggest milestones. Those first tiny fingers, sleepy cuddles and little yawns change so quickly that it's no surprise many parents choose a newborn photo shoot to remember them forever.
But with so many photographers to choose from, how do you know who's the right fit for your family?
I'm Charmaine at Albano-Storr Photography, and as a mum of three, I know that choosing someone to photograph your baby is about far more than beautiful images. You want someone you can trust, someone who understands babies, and someone who'll make the whole experience feel calm rather than stressful.
If you're looking for a newborn photographer surrey families can feel comfortable with, here are ten things I think every parent should consider before booking.
1. Safety should always come first
Your baby's safety is more important than any photograph.
A professional newborn photographer should always know how to pose babies safely, recognise when a baby needs feeding or comforting, and never force a pose that doesn't feel natural.
A relaxed baby makes for beautiful photographs, and there's never any need to rush.
2. Look for a calm, relaxed approach
Newborn sessions rarely run exactly to schedule.
Babies need feeding, changing, cuddling and sometimes simply a little extra time to settle. That's completely normal.
My sessions are designed to work around your baby, not the other way round. Whether we're in my home studio or outdoors with older siblings, I allow plenty of time so everyone can relax and enjoy the experience.
3. Choose someone whose style you genuinely love
Every photographer has their own style.
Some focus on highly posed images with lots of props, while others prefer natural, timeless portraits.
Take time to browse galleries and imagine those photographs hanging on your walls years from now. If you consistently love a photographer's work, that's usually a good sign you've found someone whose style suits your family.
4. Think about the experience, not just the photographs
The photographs matter, of course, but so does the experience itself.
Those first few weeks with a newborn can feel overwhelming. Choosing a newborn photography session that feels calm, welcoming and pressure free can make all the difference.
I want families to leave feeling they've enjoyed the morning together, not that they've survived another appointment.
5. Ask whether siblings are welcome
Your newest arrival is already part of a family story.
If you have older children, involving them creates meaningful photographs you'll treasure just as much as the individual newborn portraits.
As a mum myself, I understand that siblings don't always want to sit perfectly still. That's absolutely fine. Some of the loveliest photographs happen naturally through cuddles, giggles and little moments between brothers and sisters.
6. Find someone who understands family life
Babies don't come with instruction manuals.
Neither do toddlers.
Real family life is wonderfully unpredictable, and your photographer should understand that.
I'm proud to offer sessions that are relaxed, patient and family focused. As a mum to three autistic children and an Autism Aware photographer, I also create sensory aware sessions where everyone can feel comfortable and included.
Every family deserves photographs that reflect who they really are.
7. Consider whether you prefer a studio or outdoor session
Some parents picture soft studio portraits, while others love natural outdoor photographs.
The good news is you don't always have to choose.
I photograph families both in my Surrey home studio and outdoors across Surrey, Berkshire and surrounding areas including Reading, Lightwater, Maidenhead, Frimley, Basingstoke and Windsor.
We'll choose the setting that feels right for your family and the style of photographs you'd like to create.
8. Book early if you can
The best time to arrange newborn photography is actually before your baby arrives.
Most newborn photo shoot sessions take place within the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies are naturally sleepier and easier to settle.
Booking during pregnancy gives you peace of mind knowing everything is already organised, while still allowing flexibility if your little one decides to arrive earlier or later than expected.
9. Don't choose based on price alone
It's tempting to compare photographers purely on cost, but your photographs will become part of your family's history.
Years from now, these images will remind you just how tiny your baby once was.
Instead of looking for the cheapest option, think about the experience, quality, style and connection you feel with the photographer.
The right newborn photographer is an investment in memories you'll return to for decades.
10. Trust your instincts
Sometimes the decision simply comes down to how someone makes you feel.
Do they sound warm and approachable?
Do they answer your questions clearly?
Can you imagine feeling comfortable handing them your precious newborn?
If the answer is yes, you've probably found the right photographer.
Building trust is important because relaxed parents usually mean relaxed babies, and relaxed babies create natural, heartfelt photographs.
Creating photographs that feel like your family
For me, newborn photography isn't about perfect poses or unrealistic expectations.
It's about capturing those tiny details you'll miss before you know it. The little fingers wrapped around yours. The sleepy smiles. The way your older child gently strokes their new sibling's hair.
These are the moments that tell your family's story.
